Isle of Cumbrae - Engine Room Overview
Built in 1977 by Ailsa Troon, Isle of Cumbrae is the oldest member of the CalMac fleet as of 2020.
Originally built with 2 x Gardner 8L3B engines she was re-fitted with twin 230hp Scania D9 units in 2002.
Electrical power is provided by either one of the two Lister HRW3 generators of 32hp fed to a very basic distribution board in the port-aft side of the engine room.
Propulsion comes from two Voith Schneider Lochalsh III units each driven via a Twin Disc reduction gearbox and Fluidrive viscous coupling.
Due to her age, and relative difficulty in sourcing certain spares it is expected that she will be retired from the fleet in the next few years.

Quick video showing the glorious Big Red running after sitting dormant for 6 years. She runs rough and the exhaust leaks badly but we intend to put her right over the summer.
ummm what the SIGMA
Petrol 76 p per litre 24 years ago wow
It's the Rover James!
Britain 🇬🇧 made $#!+ cars Alegro marina Princess we just went to the cliff and jumped off 😂😂😂😂
Japanese still rule 😊😊
And now we're back to buying japanese because everything else is crap
B.L. cars were just badly made, and word got around.lol
Excellent
I really like the Multipla, but I could never own one.
The Multipla is only useful for people who want to carry 5 passengers
Bad management.
The cut to the Mini and The Who was awesome.
Then the Chinese came along and we’re all gonna be driving complete and utter garbage and that’s a damn fact
Bastards.
I don't care how practical, spaceous, comfortable, cheap etc etc the Multipla is, I would never bee caught dead in that absolutely horrendous looking thing!
Most likely typical British trade union apathy killed the British motor industry the same way it killed shipbuilding, steel manufacturing the lust goes on.
That and British car makers remained stuck in the past where as car makers in mainland Europe (particularly France & Germany) and Japan looked ahead to the future by building proper cars depending on the current economic situation
During the '70s & '80s, I was MD of a small company and so, I chose and purchased our company cars, which we changed every three years. The list begins: Daimler Sovereign, Triumph Stag, Morris Marina, Austin Metro, Austin Allegro and Austin Princess. To sum up all these cars just requires one word: total SHIT! And the worst: the Austin Princess 2200 HLS. This was my own personal car and after 3 months of sheer misery, I replaced it with a Ford Granada Mk 1, 3 litre V6. Now there was a car!
10:44 Would you like to WHAT!?!
08:07 BlueBurryyyyyys
@7:16 I just love watching these two blokes in the pub top trumping each other like little kids! Reminds me of all the car conversations I had with my friends back when I was going to school! 😜😂🤣
6:58 You can hear the contempt in the announcer's voice when he says "the only problem is, they're Japanese"
Honda at Swindon had the right attitude, the managers would wear overalls and have their meal breaks with the production staff, no us and them, that’s where Leyland failed the senior managers just didn’t no how to communicate with the people who actually made the cars which at times led to industrial unrest.
Italdesign did not have a direct role in the styling of the Ital, which had been handled in-house by Harris Mann.
And 20 years later SUV & crossovers have become the primary choice for families. We need clarkson back to look at them again
I thought Chrysler invented the minivan, not Renault
"Victoria's friend can go too. She doesn't have to stay home... and eat worms."
Jeremy was right then and he's right now. SUVs for city driving are absolutely pointless. I'm sorry but, if you are reading this and you own an SUV which never sees a dirt road, you are an imbecile.
Very interesting.
Tunes were better than the video.
13th may 2024 and still timeless
10:20 The sound engineer going on strike 🤣
Jeremy Clarkson
Brilliant 🤣
Brilliant, really enjoyed this series, thanks.
Interesting how times changes. Big, bulky, heavy, "safe" road tanks to "survive" car crash which are dangerous because many people are driving that: big, bulky, heavy road tanks, is pushed so hard, that many people really do think that sales pitches are true. I myself did believe in it. Still, never had a single person owning cars mentioned in this show complaining - especially people-movers when those were used as cheaper cargo vans for preparing venue events, move things, doing large shopping or simply travelling in a group long distance. That said, I hate those cars, because of such machines, things like Japanese tiny cars (kei) are often hard to get or simply illegal, due to concerns of collisions and accidents, and living in a large city, those would fix most of the issues. But no - big car goes vroom! Big car strong! Big car for bester person! Me big car!
One of the first cars I had was a 1969 MGB red/black. Bought in 1986, was a fun car bought by the 80s parts were pricey and sold it to a collector.
15:30
"but we do have to drive around in a car that looks completely bonkers..." Nissan Juke anyone 🤣😂
The analogy I always use when describing British Leyland to other americans is "Imagine if Chrysler owned General Motors and Ford, it owned all of Detroit, and all the brands." Dodge, Ford, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Plymouth, Lincoln, Pontiac, Mercury, Chrysler, everyone under the same roof in the same town with the same budget, and they have to fight each other.
10:21 HOLY SHIT IS THAT EVA-01 VACUUM CLEANER?!
3:53 nnnnice
15:20 so the BEST series of rallying was killed off because some clowns were lining the tracks 🤣 looks like the world was soft even back then.
Japan got America in the end. Not exactly the biggest loss.
Anything built in JP will last a lifetime if maintained. Australian professionals don't salivate over Makita - made in JP for no reason. For anyone who hasn't watched Japanese house construction and wants an unexpected hard-on over the absolute perfection with which hand preproduce 20 meter beams etc for example and fit them together with not as much as a 0.5mm gap, give it a go.
Before you had a jaaaaggg, you had a staaaaaggg
SOCIALISM killed it, as it kills anything it touches.
you're talking out your arse mate
After failing to destroy the Japanese Car Industrie, Led Lobo felt so ashamed, that he tried to commit Harakiri. (Un)fortunately his Blade was made in the UK and thus had allready rusted away😂
To be fair, square offers minor advantages in steering.
5:30 that transition was so smooth!
All these poor people praising front wheel drive econoboxes...I feel so sorry for them. The fact that evil European corporations did this to them is sickening.
